How to care for your coloured linen

Updated on: April 24 2015

Find out how you can care for your coloured linen…

The best way to add a splash of colour into your B&B, guesthouse or small hotel is to accessorise with colour. This includes your linen too! Choose a colour, whether that is deep red or royal blue, and add towels, scatter cushions and bed linen to brighten up your rooms.

Caring for this coloured linen can take a little more time and effort than looking after your pearly white towels that you may be used to. After all, you want your linen to remain bright and in tip-top condition for as long as possible. So what is the best way to care for your coloured linen?

#1 Coordinate your colours during washing

It’s always important to have a dark wash and a light wash, everyone knows that! But what about your colours? To get the most out of your coloured linen you should coordinate your colours during the washing stage. You should have dark colours, bright colours and light colours washes to avoid lint contamination and fading that comes from mixing notably different colours.

#2 Avoid optical brightening agents

These were created with bright white linen in mind. It actually has the opposite effect on coloured linen and can dull those bright colours we all love. Instead, pick a detergent that doesn’t contain brightening agents.

#3 Chlorine bleach is a big no no

This should be avoided at all costs when caring for your coloured linen, it causes permanent colour loss and shade changes. If there is a stubborn stain you just can’t seem to rid of try warm water and a colour safe bleach. Always ensure it states it can be used with the type of coloured linen you’re trying to clean and try it first on a spot that’s hidden.

#4 Read the care label

You can read all the tips there are out there for washing coloured linen, but ultimately the best thing you could take into account is the wash care label on the item you’re washing. Follow these instructions carefully to ensure you get the most out of your bed linen, towels and bathrobes.
